A1 About Trasers

About Traser in the UK

Traser is the leading brand of self-luminous watch favoured by UK Special Forces and US Navy Seal divers. Each watch is built entirely in Switzerland by MB-Microtec, not (as with most other competing brands) in China or the USA. In the 1970s they pioneered the tritium gas (H3) technology used in all such watches and they remain the world leader in this highly specialised process. Their watch dials have a luminosity equivalent to moonlight - about 100 times brighter than the best luminous paint.

Generally categorised as "military watches", Trasers are built to meet US MIL-W-46374F specification and use miniature self-activated cold light sources (also called Trasers) set into the dials and H/M/S hands, so requiring neither power supply nor wiring. The "Traser" vials are formed from borosilicate glass, internally coated with one of a range of phosphors and filled with Tritium gas. Traser vial products are intrinsically safe, and are unaffected by water, oil and most corrosive materials. Additionally, Trasers are:

  • Filament free, and thus highly resistant to shock and vibration.
  • Have long in-service life, generally in excess of 10 years.
  • Entirely maintenance free.
  • Recently the supply of Traser H3 watches to the UK market has undergone an overhaul to bring it in line with the rest of the world. Officially supplied Trasers now have a two year warranty and engraved serial numbers to ensure that any warranty claims from customers of approved outlets are dealt with smoothly. Warranty issues for Trasers bought from other trade sources cannot be dealt with by us at Alsigns. In such cases the watch owner or trader must send the watch back to Switzerland directly for repair.

    Some Illuminating Facts

Through its own research, the Swiss company MB-Microtec AG has succeeded in manufacturing a self-activated light source for use in wristwatches that is 100 times brighter than any previously available. The light-emitting devices, also known as Trasers, require no battery power or any other form of external power supply, do not require the push of a button, never need servicing or maintenance, and have a useful life of more than 20 years.

A Traser watch contains max. 1 GigaBecquerel (GBq) of tritium, a man-made radioactive hydrogen isotope that also exists in the natural environment. The tritium decays to helium and in the process emits a low energy electron. The gaseous tritium in Traser watches is contained in miniature hollow vials of phosphur-coated mineral glass (borosilicate), each sealed airtight with a laser. The decaying electrons excite the phosphur to give off a continuous "cold" light emission.

The surface of the watch is free of any radiation because the electrons do not penetrate the glass wall of the vials nor the case of the watch. The GTLS (gaseous tritium light source) vials in Traser watches are attached in such a way that breakage and/or release of the gas is highly unlikely.

International standards must be met, and Traser watches are tested to be in compliance with all mechanical and environmental regulatory requirements relating to products of this nature. More specifically, Traser watches are licensed by the Bundsamt fur Gesundheit (BAG-1971/7) in Switzerland (source country) and are approved for distribution by the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) in the USA.

Every Traser H3 timepiece uses this unique technology on the watch hands, hour markers and bezel, making them the world's easiest watch to read in low light conditions and total darkness. The benefits of tritium tube technology have made Traser watches an absolute must in the emergency, safety and protection sectors as well as in the armed forces. This also makes them ideal for fans of diving, evening sport and adventure everywhere!
